Innovation is Key for Mobile Success

Let’s look back to the good old days of 2007. That was the year that a new smartphone king took throne: the Apple iPhone. The iPhone put every other phone to shame including the Palm and the Blackberry. It simply had many “firsts” that were successfully implemented, including a capacitive multi-touch glass display and a great user interface that was meant to be easily manipulated with a finger. Back in 2007 (and even 2008) it was a known fact that the ultimate smartphone was the iPhone. There were better phones for email and better phones for durability, but the iPhone was revolutionary.

But look at 2013. What is the best phone? Is it the Samsung Galaxy S3? The HTC DNA? The Motorola Droid RAZR HD? Or is it still the iPhone? The truth is, in this day-and-age, the best phone must have the thinnest chassis, fastest processor, and highest resolution display. These simple evolutions occur on a daily basis. Every week, there is news of a phone that is .2 mm thinner than the previous “world’s thinnest smartphone”  Currently, the smartphone industry is spending all of its energy trying to catch-up or at best get to the finish line first, because the company that releases the next phone with a new, best-in-class processor, will be the go-to phone for two weeks, when the technology becomes commonplace. Sadly, this mindset removes all possible sparks of innovation and any possibility of truly winning in the mobile space.

If smartphone manufacturers actually want to win consumers, they need stop playing around and actually innovate. This means they need to do what Apple did in 2007: add technologies to a smartphone in a way that no one has ever seen before. If a new technology is innovative enough, like a flexible display with a unique implementation (not just the technology), that smartphone will beat every other smartphone on the market in the long term. Soon, another company might release an indestructible phone and now, rather than comparing two phones to see which one is thinner and faster, we are comparing entirely different products that the consumer can choose from. And thanks to truly innovative technologies, that flexible phone will stay at the front of the store for months or even years no matter what, as long as it is still seen as innovative.

Let's hope that 2013 is the year that smartphone manufacturers change their ways and actually begin innovating. We know for a fact that Apple spends a large sum on R&D and Motorola is entering the innovation game with their new ATAP Innovation group.  I am cheering for all teams in this race, as these innovations will benefit both the OEMs and consumers.

iPhone 5: Innovation or Catch-up?

Guess what Apple's CEO Tim Cook has cooked up for us this time? That's right, the iPhone 5. This new release touts a larger 4 inch "Retina" 16:9 screen, a smaller "Lightning" I/O port, 4G LTE, and a thinner and lighter design. But is the iPhone behind the times with their once-a-year releases versus Android's army of smartphones?

Introducing Samsung Tec Tiles: Taking NFC to the Next Level

Since the introduction of NFC devices exactly a year ago, when Google Wallet promised a revolutionary new way of using Android phones in the everyday world, there haven't been any significant uses for the hyped up technology until now. Samsung has created these so-called "Tec Tiles," little squarish stickers that seem innocuously childish at first, but actually have the power to respond to your phone's NFC device. If you have a Galaxy S III, Galaxy S II (T-Mobile only), Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S 4G or Galaxy S Blaze 4G, you will really want/need Tec Tiles, so read more after the break!

These so-called Tec-Tiles can be mounted on just about anywhere, on your backpack, your office desk, your car's dashboard, your kitchen table, you name it. Consuming only 4 square inches of space, its portability is the reason why it brings something new. With each Tec Tile, you are able to customize what action your Android device will take when it registers the sticker, using the Samsung Tec Tiles app, whether it is muting your phone, turning off Wi-Fi and data, turning on music, etc: the possibilities are endless. So, if you want to silence your phone when you get to your office, simply place your phone over the sticker, and you're set for the day. It can really be a time-saver in some cases, such as when you are in a car and you really want to focus on the road. Having a sticker that tells your phone to turn on its navigation will be extremely helpful here. For only $14.99, having 5 Samsung Tec Tiles can really improve your life, for sure.

Did Parrot (Creator of AR Drone) Mess Up?

Shipments of the very anticipated AR Drone 2.0's have just arrived to pre-orderers. If you were unaware, the Drone is a helicopter that can be controlled by your tablet/phone. It even has a 720p camera for taking footage of your flights. There is just one issue with the new 2.0 version: the new Free-Flight application is not available on the Google Play Store. Rather, it is only availalbe on iOS. This means that android users are unable to utilize the newest fuctions of the Drone, such as raking videos of your adventures and doing barrel rolls. Even the AR Drone manual states "Search the Android Market for Free Flight 2".

How could Parrot forget about more than half of all of the smartphones in the world?

Blurtt: The Future of Texting (iOS)

There are two levels of conveying emotions when talking to friends on your mobile device. There's plain old texting. Then there's texting with emoticons. "What else could there be?", you may ask. Well, there is a new iOS app that adds a whole new dimension to sending messages to friends. The app is called Blurtt (yes, that's two "t"s).

Blurtt is a messaging app where a user can take a picture with their mobile phone's or tablet's camera, or quickly search the plethora of images on the net (without leaving the app) then add text over the image, edit it, and send the new image to friends through email, text, Twitter, or Facebook.

Check out the app at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/blurtt/id504945253?mt=8. Currently the app is only available for the iPad and iPhone, but the company has stated that and Android app is in the works.

Nokia leaks Lumia PureView Concept Images

When first announced, the pureview looked like a cool phone that might be worth getting. The 41Megapixel sensor, Carl Zeiss Lens, and 4'3" HD screen were all nice little features that I wouldn't mind having in my phone. But wow, look at that image that was supposedly leaked out by a Nokia Office in China recently. Read more after the break.

I have no idea how that is going to feel in my pocket and quite frankly I would prefer not to know. Anyway, this is frankly just weird because we were shown pictures of PureView back at MWC. Remember? The photo looked something like this ...

You might also remember that the Nokia PureView was originally announced that it would be running on Nokia's own proprietary O.S, Symbian Belle, but on the picture you can clearly see that it says that it's running on Window's O.S.

It is possible that this is a completely different phone, but its confusing that Nokia would release two PureView's both with the same camera and screen size with the only main differences being the O.S and design. Who knows, maybe they just re-imagined the phone entirely.

Do you really believe Nokia would change the design so drastically? Is it a completely different phone? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

A Bowl of Jellybeans from Android

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona yesterday, the Google booth provided visitors with a sweet treat, jellybeans coated with Androids around the jellybean bowl. This is probably the biggest hint of what the Android team has to offer in the coming months, which will possibly be a new version of Android - which will possibly be called Jellybean. Google has declined to make any comment about the mysterious bowl of jellybeans lying on their booth in the middle of the MWC, but we will see in due time.
